THIRD
WEEK OF ADVENT, 2023
(1Th
5:16-23) Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In all things give
thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all.
Extinguish not the spirit. Despise not prophecies. But prove all
things: hold fast that which is good. From all appearance of evil
refrain yourselves. And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in
all things: that your whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved
blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

EXCERPT MANILA STANDARD: The meaning of Gaudete Sunday
“In these
times when so much is happening around us, good and bad, we are called
to recognize Christ in our midst”
Where are we human beings in a
world with so much evil and suffering?
This is the message of Gaudete
Sunday. We can only rejoice if we see though our sinfulness, if we
confront the evil in and among us.
In this Season of Joy, we can only
recognize Christ in the manger if, like John the Baptist, our
hearts and minds are not burdened with selfishness, greed, ambition,
and all forms of moral baggage that becloud our soul into seeing both
majesty and mercy of Christ. We must wear the vest of charity,
selflessness, trust and total dependence in God and most of all love
which is the greatest of all virtues.
In these times when so much is
happening around us, good and bad, we are called to recognize Christ in
our midst and discern his divine will.
In every event that occurs in our
personal lives and the life of our nation, we must pray that we will
see things from the perspective of our faith in the Lord and try to
understand what he is trying to tell us.
As God is the God of history, he is
also the God of forgiveness and providence, and most of all the God of
love and joy.

DR Z health update: On
November 17, I underwent an open right radical nephrectomy to remove a
13 cm clear cell renal carcinoma. Though, thankfully, there is no
metastatic disease, the mere size and stage of the tumor makes
recurrence a distinct possibility. During the later days of
December I will be undergoing further testing and staging with the
ultimate intention of beginning immunotherapy with Pembrolizumab, a
checkpoint inhibitor, in early January. I will hopefully resume
regular Trib Times updates in mid January after a brief Christmas
message next week.
I am very grateful for the support and prayers I have received of which
the following is a brief example:
"You
have been in my prayers so often. Thank you for the previous update and
the recent post on Advent from The Catholic Thing. Today, being Gaudete
Sunday, may you tap into some reasons for joy despite many reasons for
sorrows due to your present afflictions. Know that even though we live
physically far apart, spiritually we are closer than we realize, as
Prayer transcends the miles. May you be consoled and comforted by this
union".

77. Sarah also said, 'If I
asked God that everyone should see good in
me, I should be doing penance at the door of each one. I pray rather
that my heart should be pure in all things.'
