FATHER DAVID NIX: How are Age of Church History is Different From All Others in the Past
As I finished up Vespers tonight for the Conversion of St. Paul and got
my ribbons ready for tomorrow on my old-school Divine Office for the
third-class feast of St. Polycarp, I realized something tonight:
Whereas St. Paul probably prayed all 150 Psalms by memory in Hebrew
every day or every week, and whereas St. Paul probably asked for
intercession for the people he killed before his own conversion and
perhaps even asked intercession for all those he names in his letter to
the Hebrews (ch. 11-13) there is something St. Paul and St. Polycarp
did not have: 2000 years of saints and martyrs in the Catholic calendar
and roll-call of those catalogued in the highest roll call of the altar
through canonization.
Many of us traditional Catholics feel very abandoned by the current
governing powers of the Catholic Church and since inauguration day—the
current governing powers of the US government (which, yes, I know, I
know, we shouldn’t have put so much hope in a fair election or in “the
plan” in a country that slaughters her own children as if in an urban
death factory on conveyor belts.) At least Catholics being persecuted
after the French Revolution could meditate on how much support they
knew that had coming from the papacy, from the Vatican, from those
holding to the Magisterium in Italy, from “Eternal Rome.”
But today, we traditional Catholics in America feel all alone. Well, it
hit me that we are not alone. We have a larger corpus of saints to call
on than St. Peter or St. Paul did. We all (even non-traditional
Catholics) feel so isolated and alone in lockdown. As overly-pious and
even as corny as it might read to certain readers, I propose we turn
our loneliness to making friends in heaven. I propose we start thinking
about the saints, doing litanies to ask for their intercession and
begin—on a daily basis—to start talking to them as our best friends.
Yes, God has permitted or called us to carry a very unique cross in
this time in Church history that probably has something to do with the
third Secret of Fatima being the great and final apostasy of the Church
from the hierarchy down. But God has also given us something that no
other Catholics in Church history have been given: The largest list of
saints up to this point in Church history. This isn’t just due to the
fact we are the most recent Catholics alive on planet earth. As I have
said on previous podcasts, there have been 70,000,000 martyrs for
Christ in history but more than 45,500,000 of those 70,000,000 have
died in the past 100 years. This means that we should also start
praying to the martyrs whose blood is so freshly dried that it is a
reminder that all saints are so willing to intercede for us on a
minute-by-minute basis. We need not be so lonely if we remember the
saints can be our best friends.
We may live in the darkest time in Church history, but never have we
had more friends in heaven. I mean it quite literally that never once
in history have Catholics had so many saints in heaven to call upon.
A MOMENT WITH MARY: Christ will conquer through Mary
“Be not afraid!” Christ said to the apostles (cf. Lk 24:36) and to the
women (cf. Mt 28:10) after the Resurrection. According to the Gospels,
these words were not addressed to Mary. Strong in her faith, she had no
fear. Mary’s participation in the victory of Christ became clear to me
above all from the experience of my people. Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski
told me that his predecessor, Cardinal August Hlond, had spoken these
prophetic words as he was dying: “The victory if it comes, will come
through Mary.” During my pastoral ministry in Poland, I saw for myself
how those words were coming true.
After my election as Pope, as I became more involved in the problems of
the universal Church, I came to have a similar conviction: on the
universal level, if victory comes, it will be brought by Mary. Christ
will conquer through her because He wants the Church’s victories now
and in the future to be linked to her.

(Rev 12:3-6) And
there was seen another sign in heaven. And behold a great red dragon,
having seven heads and ten horns and on his heads seven diadems. And
his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to
the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be
delivered: that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son.
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an
iron rod. And her son was taken up to God and to his throne. And the
woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared by God,
that there they should feed her, a thousand two hundred sixty days.

EXCERPT: Cervantes: Seer gives terrifying description of chastisement
And so let me go back to the Garabandal apparitions in the 1960's, one
of the most documented and scientifically well studied Marian
apparitions (perhaps next only to Medjugorje) and which were explicitly
declared as authentic by no less than Padre Pio and Mother Teresa of
Calcutta, both now saints.
Except for Mari Loli who passed on as "victim soul" in 2009, the other
visionaries- Conchita, Jacinta, and Mari-Cruz- are all living and
married with children.
I am repeating here some of the important messages conveyed in Garabandal, as they are most relevant to our days.
The Blessed Mother's message on October 18, 1961: "Many SACRIFICES must
be made... Much penance must be done... We must pay many visits to the
Blessed Sacrament... But first of all we must be very good... Already
the Cup is Filling, and if we do not change we shall be punished."
On June 19, 1962, visionary Jacinta said: "Loli and I were in the
calleja (place near the first apparition) and She (Blessed Mother) told
us a message for the whole world and it is this: The Virgin has said to
us that we are not awaiting the chastisement (because we are
disregarding Her First Message by the way we live)...But without
awaiting it, it will come because the world has not changed... and now
with this (Message) She has said it twice and we do not heed Her
because the world is worse and must change much but has not changed at
all. Prepare yourselves and confess for the chastisement will come
soon. The world continues the same and I think that the world has not
changed at all.
In her last year of apparition in Garabandal in 1965, the Blessed
Mother warned on June 18: "Since my Message of October 18, 1961 has not
been complied with and has not been made much known to the world, I
will tell you that this is the last one. Before the chalice was filling
now it is overflowing. Many cardinals, many bishops, and many priests
are on the path of perdition and they will take many would with them.
The Eucharist is being given less and less importance. We should avoid
the Wrath of God on us by our good efforts. If you ask pardon with your
sincere soul God will pardon you. It is I, Your Mother, who through the
intercession of St. Michael, wish to say that you amend, that you are
already in the last warnings and that I love you much and do not want
your condemnation. Ask us sincerely and we will give to you. You should
sacrifice more. Think of the Passion of Jesus."
Only last year, on March 12 amid the Covid-19 pandemic, visionary
Conchita gave the following message: "God is detaching us from the
securities of this world. In the silence of the church or in our house,
we are now able to make an examination of conscience so we can clean
what prevents us from hearing the Voice of God clearly."
Conchita, as well as the other visionaries, were interviewed many times
during and after the apparitions. In one interview, Conchita was asked
about the chastisement that would befall mankind if not enough
conversion is done.
Conchita said: "[The Chastisement] was horrible to see. We were really
frightened, and I know of no words that could explain it. We saw rivers
change into blood.... Fire fell from the sky.... And something much
worse still, which I'm not able to [talk about] now... She showed us
how the great Chastisement for all mankind would come, and that it
would come directly from God. At a certain moment, not a single motor
or machine would function; a terrible heat wave will strike the earth
and men will begin to feel a great thirst. In desperation they will
seek water, but this will evaporate from the heat. Then almost everyone
will despair and they will seek to kill one another. But they will lose
their strength and fall to the ground. Then it will be understood that
it is God alone Who has permitted this. Then we saw a crowd in the
midst of flames. The people ran to hurl themselves into the lakes and
seas. But the water seemed to boil, and instead of putting out the
flames, it seemed to enkindle them even more. It was so horrible that I
asked the Blessed Virgin to take all the young children with her before
all this happened. But the Virgin told us that by the time it came,
they would all be adults." (End of quote.)
The latter information saying the children during the apparitions (1961
65) would be adults gives us a hint on the chastisement time frame.
Those children are certainly now adults, even as the Garabandal
visionaries are in their senior years.

THE SHIELD OF FAITH: Vader (Father)
CATHOLIC WORLD REPORT: “Make everything count for eternity’: The story of Fr. Francis X. Lasance
MEDITATION: Interruptions: Our Real Work
EXCERPT THE CATHOLIC THING: A Different Inauguration by Fr. Paul D. Scalia
Last week the world was focused on
the presidential inauguration. Today’s Gospel presents another – a very
different and more important – inauguration: the beginning of our
Lord’s public ministry. “After John had been arrested, Jesus came to
Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God.” Our Lord even gives a brief
inaugural address: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God
is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Unlike the typical
timebound, agenda-laden inaugural address, our Lord’s words focus on
eternal truths. They are timeless and thus apt for every moment in
history, including our own.
He declares, “This is the time of
fulfillment.” For the ancient Israelites, that had a very specific
meaning: the realization of all that had been promised and prophesied
for centuries. The long-awaited Messiah has come. The kingdom of God is
no longer a desire, but at hand.
More broadly, we can take the “time
of fulfillment” to indicate that all time and all times have meaning
only in relation to Christ and His Kingdom. He relates all of history
to Himself and thus sets it in proper perspective. If we try to
interpret and respond to our times apart from Him, we tragically
misread them.
This is the proper supernatural
outlook: to measure our current circumstances not according to the
world’s standard and solutions, but according to the reality and power
of the Kingdom of God that is at hand no less today than 2000 years
ago. And that Kingdom requires two things: repentance and faith.
“Repent” is the foundational Gospel
command. It’s always timely. Sin is the construction of my own petty
little kingdom. It might be a squalid, selfish, peevish place, but at
least it’s mine. Admission into the Kingdom of God requires that I
repent and renounce this miserable rival kingdom.
This repentance takes on greater
significance as we are called to confront the evils of our day. The
greatest danger in war is to adopt the immoral tactics of the enemy.
So, in opposing the culture of death, we risk growing bitter, hardened,
and resentful. Our response to evil must always be seen in relation to
the “time of fulfillment,” and thus preceded by our own repentance.
Only a heart set right with Christ can see with clarity and speak with
charity.
The prophets of Israel never
considered themselves exempt from the sinfulness of their people. “Woe
to me! For I am lost,” says Isaiah, “For I am a man of unclean lips,
and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips.” (Is 6:5) The
first step in speaking the truth is repentance for our own actions
against it. As we have an obligation to bear witness to the truth, so
we should understand ourselves as rebellious, sinful, and in need of
the truth we proclaim.
Next, “believe in the Gospel.”
Repentance cleanses our souls; faith opens them to God’s grace and
truth. Again, this takes on greater significance in our trying times.
Against increasing darkness, the light of faith enables us to judge
wisely, so that the world’s deceits will not mislead us. That faith
also makes us stouthearted, able to stand fast and persevere, because
we know the one in Whom we have believed. (cf. 2 Tim 1:12)
An exchange between Frodo and
Gandalf is helpful for this consideration. The poor hobbit has just
learned that the evil Sauron was rising again and menacing Middle
Earth. He says, “I wish it need not have happened in my time.” Again,
one sympathizes. But Gandalf responds, “So do I, and so do all who live
to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to
decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
For us, the first and most fundamental thing to do with the time that is given us is to repent and believe in the Gospel.

VICTIMS OF ABORTION: Broken Branches Newsletter Issue 140, Dec/Jan 2021
Pope Saint John Paul II (Evangelium Vitae): A
great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up
throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer,
may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life,
from every Christian community, from every group and association, from
every family and from the heart of every believer.
The over 60 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade
and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope
Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in
God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek
the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers
are heard.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates
January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day
of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the
Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23,
when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular
day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the
right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human
person committed through acts of abortion.”
As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the
penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another
way to take part is through participating in special events to observe
the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Call your local diocese or parish to
find out what events might be taking place in your area.
LIFESITE NEWS: Biden to rescind trans troop ban, restore abortion funds in first wave of executive orders
EXCERPT USCCB President's Statement on the Inauguration of Joseph R. Biden, Jr., as 46th President of the United States of America:
Working with President Biden will be unique, however, as he is our
first president in 60 years to profess the Catholic faith. In a time of
growing and aggressive secularism in American culture, when religious
believers face many challenges, it will be refreshing to engage with a
President who clearly understands, in a deep and personal way, the
importance of religious faith and institutions. Mr. Biden’s piety and
personal story, his moving witness to how his faith has brought him
solace in times of darkness and tragedy, his longstanding commitment to
the Gospel’s priority for the poor — all of this I find hopeful and
inspiring.
At the same time, as pastors, the nation’s bishops are given the duty
of proclaiming the Gospel in all its truth and power, in season and out
of season, even when that teaching is inconvenient or when the Gospel’s
truths run contrary to the directions of the wider society and culture.
So, I must point out that our new President has pledged to pursue
certain policies that would advance moral evils and threaten human life
and dignity, most seriously in the areas of abortion, contraception,
marriage, and gender. Of deep concern is the liberty of the Church and
the freedom of believers to live according to their consciences.
Our commitments on issues of human sexuality and the family, as with
our commitments in every other area — such as abolishing the death
penalty or seeking a health care system and economy that truly serves
the human person — are guided by Christ’s great commandment to love and
to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters, especially the
most vulnerable.
For the nation’s bishops, the continued injustice of abortion remains
the “preeminent priority.” Preeminent does not mean “only.” We have
deep concerns about many threats to human life and dignity in our
society. But as Pope Francis teaches, we cannot stay silent when nearly
a million unborn lives are being cast aside in our country year after
year through abortion.
Abortion is a direct attack on life that also wounds the woman and
undermines the family. It is not only a private matter, it raises
troubling and fundamental questions of fraternity, solidarity, and
inclusion in the human community. It is also a matter of social
justice. We cannot ignore the reality that abortion rates are much
higher among the poor and minorities, and that the procedure is
regularly used to eliminate children who would be born with
disabilities.
Rather than impose further expansions of abortion and contraception, as
he has promised, I am hopeful that the new President and his
administration will work with the Church and others of good will. My
hope is that we can begin a dialogue to address the complicated
cultural and economic factors that are driving abortion and
discouraging families. My hope, too, is that we can work together to
finally put in place a coherent family policy in this country, one that
acknowledges the crucial importance of strong marriages and parenting
to the well-being of children and the stability of communities. If the
President, with full respect for the Church’s religious freedom, were
to engage in this conversation, it would go a long way toward restoring
the civil balance and healing our country’s needs.

THE EPOCH TIMES: ‘They Want to Cancel Our Culture, Our History, Our Liberty’: Goya CEO
Robert Unanue, Goya Foods President and CEO, said on Friday the political left has weaponized the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus to take away God, culture, history, and liberty from the people of the United States.
“The problem is it’s a political
year. They weaponized coronavirus. Unfortunately, they shut down this
economy. The worst thing we could do is shut down our economy, kill our
spirit. We need a reason to get up in the morning: God, family, work.
And they are taking away our spirit, they’re taking away our ability to
work,” Unanue told Fox News on Jan. 15.
“We’re one nation under God. We’re
not one nation under Twitter. We’re not one nation under big media and
or under central government. We’re trying to have media, Big Tech
control our lives, the government control our lives,” he said.
“They want to cancel God. They want
to cancel our speech. They want to cancel our culture, our history, our
liberty. They want to control us, the few controlling the many like a
bunch of sheep. None of these people care about us, we can not move
away from God. We need to love and to build, not hate and destroy,” he
added.
Unanue said Goya experienced its most successful year in 2020 after leftists tried to boycott his products.
Unanue made sympathetic remarks
about Trump earlier in 2020, comparing the president’s
entrepreneurialism to that of his grandfather’s. His remarks sparked
ire among Trump’s critics, with celebrities and politicians, including
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and former Democratic
presidential candidate Julian Castro, denouncing the brand or calling
for Goya boycotts.
Ocasio-Cortez was nominated
“employee of the month” in December by Goya after her call to boycott
Goya stimulated a 10-fold growth in sales, Unanue told The Michael
Berry Show.
Unanue further criticized the left, saying that their handling of the CCP virus pandemic was done for political gain.
“They essentially declared martial
law. … It’s the worst thing we could have done, just for political
gain. I think it’s criminal, I think it’s immoral to shut down this
economy for this basically political reasons,” he said.
Unanue called on people to get closer to God during this difficult time.
“We need to not move away from God. We need to move closer to God,” he said.
