Harsh weather pounds the United States
Residents in the Midwest and East were bracing for more harsh weather Tuesday after being pounded in recent days by storms packing damaging winds and heavy rains that have killed at least 20 people.
In Iowa, the storms sparked tornado warnings across the middle third of the state, and the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in three counties. Eight counties have been declared disaster areas and more than 75,000 people are without power in the Des Moines area.

Most Asian stocks tumbled further today as investors became increasingly worried about the weak yen, which fell to a seven-year low against the U.S. dollar.

If El Nino is ending can La Nina be far behind?
Just when you thought the El Nino weather problems were easing, the climate could be heading into its also threatening opposite, La Nina.
Normal sea-surface readings off South America's west coast range from the 60s to 70s Fahrenheit. In an El Nino they exceed 80 degrees, but during La Nina, the easterly trade winds strengthen, cold upwelling off Peru and Ecuador intensifies, and sea-surface temperatures there fall as much as 7 degrees below normal.
La Nina's effects include the 1988 Midwest drought and an increased hurricane threat in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Scientists discuss how to warn about asteroids without causing panic
Following March's false alarm about an asteroid coming dangerously close to Earth in the 21st century and two Hollywood summer blockbusters about cosmic collisions, experts met Saturday to plan asteroid warnings that won't trigger mass panic.
Just Friday scientists using a radar antenna in Goldstone, California, observed that a 100-foot- wide asteroid discovered days earlier will pass within 476,000 miles (about twice the distance from the earth to the moon) of Earth on Monday. That's the closest future passage of any asteroid now being tracked.

It will take wartime resources to put out Indonesia's forest fires, and there is a good chance there will be new blazes and more haze over Southeast Asia, according to a senior U.N. official. Teen cites demons, other's influence in slaying of mother
A teen-ager accused of fatally stabbing his mother and gunning down two classmates testified Thursday that he was driven by demons who told him he would be "nothing'' if he didn't kill.
A sobbing Luke Woodham, 17, said he remembered getting a butcher knife and seeing his mother's bloody body - all the while, his head ringing with instructions from his mentor, fellow teen-ager Grant Boyette.
