KATYA RIVAS- VISIONARY, STIGMATIST, EVANGELIST
Readers may recall a headline story published on the Trib Times last year describing the FOX TV special "Signs From God" which featured Katya and her ministry. Earlier this week I participated in a meeting with Katya Rivas and her spiritual advisor Father Renzo Sessolo. The meeting was attended by approximately fifteen individuals of various parishes in the Greater Miami area. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the lay apostalate, Apostalate of the New Evangelization (ANE), which they have founded and are attempting to spread worldwide.
Briefly, Katya is attempting to join Pope John Paul II in his efforts towards a new evangelization, particularly in this Jubilee year. The mechanism utilized by ANE is the establishment of small local prayer groups known as "casitas", or "little houses" of prayer. The groups agree to meet weekly or at least every other week, to pray and organize evangelic activity. The prayer sessions include the Rosary and/or Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Scriptural Readings, readings from official Church documents (eg, encyclicals), and excerpts from Katya's messages. Katya's messages are available in eight published books, all with her Bishop's Imprimatur, as well as online at http://www.greatcrusade.org/. Readers familiar with Father Gobbi's Cenacles will recognize the general similarity in format to the ANE prayer sessions.
At the conclusion of the prayer sessions plans are made for members to participate in various spiritual and corporal works of mercy such as visiting the sick and evangelizing at prisons. Katya personally stressed the latter, commenting that the most inspiring testimonies that she has received have been from prisoners who have been converted through her ministry.
Initially it is expected that the "casitas" would be composed of individuals from relatively widely dispersed parishes within the community. As the movement spreads and more individuals are invited to participate, groups would splinter off into their own separate "casitas". As the number of "casitas" in each community would increase, so would the impact of their prayer, evangelic activity, and works of mercy on the non-Christian community. This would in turn increase the number of participants and the number of "casitas". As one meditates on the purpose and activities of the movement, one is reminded of the early Church as described in the Book of Acts. We are blessed to live in amazing times!! Come Holy Spirit!

(Acts 2:17-18) "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
The Philokalia excerpt: St. Hesychios "On Watchfulness and Holiness"
73. Do not devote all your time to your body but apply to it a measure of
asceticism appropriate to its strength and then turn all your intellect to
what is within. "Bodily asceticism has only a limited use, but true devotion
is useful in all things' (1 Tim. 4:8).

LENTEN SABBATICAL
The TRIB TIMES will not be updated this year during the Lenten season extending to the first week after Easter. I have decided to take a "cyber-holiday" in which I will limit my computer time to 30 minutes each morning and evening.
I will read all emails I receive during that time, and will answer all that I can, time permitting. Updating the Trib Times on a daily basis over the past thirty months has made it impossible for me to do any significant classical spiritual reading. I am feeling that void, and thus have resolved to attempt to remedy this, God permitting, during this Holy Year Lenten season. In addition, I feel called to a greater intensity in my prayer life during this crucial segment of the Jubilee Year.
I apologize to all who have recently subscribed but will keep your email information for use after my return. God willing, the next issue of the Trib Times should be on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 30, 2000. Please keep me in your prayers, and be assured that I will do the same.

A Lenten Reflection: Humility reminds us that in the physical act of pointing at our neighbor's faults we must, by necessity, direct one finger at them and three fingers at ourselves.

LENT MUST BE A TIME OF ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS, URGES PHILADELPHIA ARCHBISHOP
(NE) During this Holy Year the Lenten Season "will be a time of great and unparalleled grace for the whole Church," stated Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, Archbishop of Philadelphia, in his Pastoral Letter to faithful for the Lenten Season, to begin this week. The Cardinal proposed as a central theme for Lenten reflection "Celebrate Jesus Christ: Son of God and Son of Mary."
In his message to faithful, Cardinal Bevilacqua called to to have "special moments of personal encounters with Christ," which must "lead to a deeper identification with Our Lord and join our faith and good deeds in a daily answer to Christ's calling to holiness." He also emphasized the sacrament of Reconciliation and the Adoration of the Eucharist as two very important means to encounter the Lord Jesus.
"It is my hope that everyone, especially those who have been away for a long while, will take the opportunity to go to Confession during this sacred season," stated the Archbishop of Philadelphia. He also urged participation in the Eucharistic Assembly that will take place during the first days of April and which "will provide us the opportunity to reflect on Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist, as a source of strength and unity for the Catholic Church in America."

has been granted uninterrupted, pure, and spiritual prayer? Yet this is the
mark of the inner monk.

70. He who has renounced such things as marriage, possessions and other worldly
pursuits is outwardly a monk, but may not yet be a monk inwardly. Only he
who has renounced the impassioned thoughts of his inner self, which is the
intellect, is a true monk. It is easy to be a monk in one's outer self if
one wants to be; but no small struggle is required to be a monk in one's
inner self.

IN BEIJING, THE SIGNS OF A NEW STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
In China on March 2, the state-run Peoples Daily ran several articles touting the benefits of strategic partnership between Russia and China. The publication appears to endorse little noticed negotiations between Moscow and Beijing, which are exchanging top-ranking officials in preparation for a summit. Details have been closely guarded, but the talks involve oil and weapons. The timing of the state press coverage suggests that there has now been a breakthrough in the talks. And it appears that a more vigorous strategic partnership between Russia and China one that will worry the West is beginning to take shape.

69. One ignorant of the spiritual path is not on his guard against his
impassioned thoughts, but devotes himself entirely to the flesh. He is either
a glutton, or dissipated, or full of resentment, anger and rancour. As a
result, he darkens his intellect, or he practises excessive asceticism and
so confuses his mind.

THANK YOU JESUS, FOR ANSWERED PRAYER!!!!!!!!!!!
FROM THE MAILBAG
VIA [email protected]: I am part way through our School of Healing. One word about the experience: WOW!!
I so far have witnessed the Holy Spirit physically cure one person in my small 4 some prayer group after laying on hands (I could feel the healing take place...a electrical current passed through my arm...just like in the Bible when Jesus' garment was touched by the "unclean woman" and Jesus felt the power go out of Him)...Thanks be to God.
Healing is a very delicate teaching and understanding. In our efforts to do the will of God, we are being taught to be careful not to damage another's faith and understanding (especially when healing does not take place, right away).
I am being led by a wonderful group (Divine Mercy prayer group) who together are studying Francis MacNutt's video on Healing (former priest who got married). Francis' understanding of God's love, faith and "ways of healing" are quite remarkable. Francis has witnessed healing in numerous situations, has talked extensively with others who have been given the gift of healing by God and does a very good job of communicating his experiences. He provides excellent guidance on how we should approach healing through prayer and the laying on of hands.
I have no doubt that this man is Holy Spirit led. I recommend his book "Healing"...Ava Maria Press 1999. It's a real eye opener, not only on the subject of healing but also learning to understand how God works within the lives of people who turn to Him.
(Mark 16:17-18) And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
The Philokalia excerpt: St. Hesychios "On Watchfulness and Holiness"
68. He who always concentrates on the inner life will acquire self-restraint.
He will also be able to contemplate, theologize and pray. This is what the
Apostle meant when he said: 'Walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfil
the desire of the flesh' (Gal. 5:16).

BABY BORN IN TREE RESCUED; THOUSANDS STRANDED IN MOZAMBIQUE
(AP) _ With a rescue helicopter hovering overhead and floodwaters below, Sophia Pedro gave birth to a baby girl in a treetop she had sought refuge in four days earlier, one of as many as 1 million people made homeless in this southeast African nation.
An hour later, Pedro and her daughter were rescued after a medic lowered from a helicopter cut the newborn's umbilical cord and pulled the two to safety.
Wednesday's dramatic rescue came as thousands more Mozambicans remained stranded in trees, on rooftops or on shrinking islands of land. Thousands more are feared dead in flooding that has devastated one of the world's poorest countries.

MIDEAST PEACE PROCESS AT CRITICAL STAGE- ANNAN
(Reuters) - The Middle East peace process is at a critical stage and there is an urgent need to find a just solution for the Palestinians, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in remarks made at a conference on Wednesday.
Conference organisers said such meetings were usually held once a year in different parts of the world to raise awareness of the issues facing the Palestinian people.
U.S. President Bill Clinton's Middle East envoy, Dennis Ross, said on Monday he had failed to end a month-long deadlock in the Israeli-Palestinian peace moves.

OUR LORD'S
MESSAGE THROUGH FR. JACK SPAULDING
(Bishop's Statement)
at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Phoenix, AZ February 24, 2000
My dear ones, I come to you this night to encourage you to continue to walk in faith.
My little ones, be simple in your life and in your faith. Listen to Me speak to your heart in My Holy Eucharist and in My words through Sacred Scripture. Hold fast to these and you will not be shaken. The more simple your life, My dear ones, the less cluttered your heart will be.
I ask you this night to give to Me now all of your weaknesses, all the propensities that you have to sinfulness. If you give your sin to Me, I then will hear you. If you keep your sin, it will weigh you down and crush your heart and discourage your spirit.
My dear little ones, I ask you not to be discouraged, not to be weighed down. So give Me your sin and I in turn will give you healing. In your simplicity and in your honesty before Me, you will shine like a light to the world. That light, My dear ones, is My love and My mercy and My healing and My compassion and My forgiveness. I assure you of My love and that I am with you always.
Be simple, My dear ones. Unclutter your hearts so that My peace will remain with you. I bless you this night with My peace and mercy.
HOLY FATHER'S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR MARCH
(VIS) - The Holy Father's general prayer intention for March is: "That the Holy Year, a favorable time for repentance and mercy, may foster in us deep and lasting conversion."
His missionary intention is: "That the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Savior, may protect and sustain missionaries in their apostolic work."
"....The Beatitudes are the Gospel completion of the Law given on Sinai."-Pope John Paul II
The Philokalia excerpt: St. Hesychios "On Watchfulness and Holiness"
66. Someone else wise in the things of God has said that as the fruit begins
with the flower, so the practice of the ascetic life begins with self control.
Let us then learn to control ourselves with due measure and judgment, as
the Fathers teach us. Let us pass all the hours of the day in the guarding
of the intellect, for by doing this we shall with God's help and with a certain
forcefulness be able to quell and reduce the evil in us. For the spiritual
life, through which the kingdom of heaven is given, does indeed require a
certain forcefulness (cf. Matt. 11:12).

A multi-million dollar research project to clone a billionaire's dog has spawned a gene bank that hopes to clone household pets. Texas-based Genetic Savings and Clone last week opened its doors to pet lovers who want to store the DNA of a cherished animal companion in the hopes that one day they will be cloned. The company is a spin-off from the Missyplicity project, a two-year, $2.3 million effort by researchers at Texas A&M to clone an anonymous Bay Area billionaire's dog called Missy.
The research effort expects to successfully clone Missy, a mongrel adopted from a dog pound, within three months to a year.At least two dozen surrogate canine mothers have been implanted with clone embryos and the researchers are waiting to see which, if any, develop into pregnancies."We don't have any pregnancies yet," said Dr. Mark Westhusin, leader of the Missyplicity project and a co-founder of GSC. "It's hard to predict how long it will take."
Meanwhile, Westhusin and his colleagues are looking to turn their pioneering dog cloning technology into a profit. GSC claims to have already received three months' worth of orders in the first three days.
''Nanotechnology will lead to the next industrial revolution,'' the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy proclaims in a report, Shaping the World Atom by Atom.
''The possibilities to create new things appear limitless,'' said Horst Stormer, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. ''Nanotechnology has given us the tools to play with the ultimate toy box of nature -- atoms and molecules.''
Reflecting the mounting excitement, the White House report proposes a ''grand alliance'' of government, research universities and private industry to make the United States the world leader in nanoscience and technology.
''The potential for nanotechnology to transform so many aspects of human existence is almost without precedent,'' the report declares.
The Philokalia excerpt: St. Hesychios "On Watchfulness and Holiness"
65. St. Basil the Great, mouthpiece of Christ and pillar of the Church,
says that a great help towards not sinning and not commiting daily the same
faults is for us to review in our conscience at the end of the day what we
have done wrong and what we have done right. Job did this with regard both
to himself and to his children (cf. Job 1:5). These daily reckonings illumine
a man's hour by hour behavior.
