Israel Rejects Palestinian Demand

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Only a day after Israel agreed to consider a ``timeout'' in Jewish settlement construction, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that construction would continue to accommodate natural population growth.

The Palestinians, meanwhile, said peace negotiations cannot resume unless Israel stops all building in the settlements. ``This is the bottom line as far as all Palestinians are concerned,'' said Palestinian Cabinet minister Hanan Ashrawi.

Pope Continues Hectic Schedule

The pope moves with increasing difficulty these days, sometimes uses a cane, has a strong tremor in his left hand and an often quavering voice. But he continues to confound skeptics with his ability to maintain grueling schedules. On Friday, he begins a five-day trip to Brazil.

Sunday's Mass was the closing event in a religious congress aimed at reinvigorating the faith of Catholics and preparing them for the year 2000, when Christianity enters its third millennium.

``This congress is the last of the century: a century that has seen, on a planetary scale, grave attacks against man and the truth of his being. In the name of totalitarian and mendacious ideologies, this century has sacrificed millions of human lives,'' the pope said in a strong voice.

At the same time, he said, ``from the dark shadows, this century has also conserved the faith transmitted by the Apostles.''

Israel Commemoration Falling Apart

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) -- The Jewish year 5758 was going to be one long party, marking a century since the founding of the Zionist movement and 50 years since the tumultuous, exhilarating establishment of Israel.

Instead, plans for a year-long commemoration are falling apart, undermined by a nationwide funk, a deepening economic crisis and worsening social divisions.

For Israelis, who will usher in the Jewish New Year on Wednesday night, there is mostly aggravation these days:

--Prospects for peace with the Arabs, which seemed so tantalizingly close, are fading. There appears to be no remedy to the terrorism of Islamic militant groups, and relations with the Palestinians and other Arabs are fraying.

--Tension between Israelis who think the Palestinians should get their own state and those who don't has blossomed into open loathing.

--Animosity is growing between Israel's shrinking secular majority and resurgent groups of religious and ultra-religious Jews who seek to turn the Middle East's only democracy into a Jewish theocracy.

--Efforts to integrate the half of Israel's 4.7 million Jews who are European-descended Ashkenazim and the poorer Sephardim who hail from the Middle East are floundering.

Pollster Yossi Vadana said the national mood has seldom been darker. ``There is a feeling that the country is weaker than in the past. There is disappointment and fear,'' he said.

Hurricane Nora Pummels Baja

SAN QUINTIN, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Nora pummeled Baja California with high winds and heavy rain today and headed toward the American Southwest, where people hurried to fill sand bags and stockpile emergency supplies.

Nora was expected to cross Baja California and move north up the Gulf of California, weakening as it approached southern Arizona. Meterologists warned, however, that Nora would still be a tropical storm when it entered the United States -- a rarity for the desert Southwest.

Forecasters predicted up to 8 inches of rain for the Yuma, Ariz., region -- double the area's average annual rainfall.

ARAB LAWMAKER PREDICTS ARAB-ISRAEL WAR 'THIS YEAR'

Arab Israeli Knesset member Abdul Wahab Darawashe has predicted the breakout of an Arab-Israeli war before the end of this year, and believes Israel would lose.

Palestinians warn of violence if Jews remain in Ras al-Amud

JERUSALEM (September 17) -- The Palestinian Authority, escalating its rhetoric against the Netanyahu government, raised the specter of Arab riots today unless Israel removed the three Jewish families from Jerusalem's Ras al-Amud neighborhood.

"The PA officially holds the Israeli government responsible for any development that will take place unless the settlers are evicted in the coming hours," PA Local Authorities Minister Saeb Erekat told the Palestinian Legislative Council yesterday during its session in Ramallah.

El Nino Bigger Than Continental U.S

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- El Niño is anything but little. Signs tracked by satellites in space show that the globally disruptive weather phenomenon could well live up to its stormy billing. For one thing, its mass of warm water in the Pacific Ocean has grown to 1 and 1/2 times the size of the continental United States. And other data mean the southwestern states could well be pounded with winter storms.

In May, when scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena announced that satellite images showed a brewing El Niño, the warm mass was two-thirds its current size.

Settler takeover stirs new tension in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Ultra-nationalist Jewish settlers made themselves at home on Monday in two houses they took over in disputed east Jerusalem. The Israeli government, though officially opposed, said they had a legal right to stay.

Palestinians threw stones at police guarding the settlers after they moved in late Sunday, and Palestinian leaders warned more violence would erupt unless the settlers were immediately evicted.

Speaking of eclipses, a total eclipse of the Moon will be visible from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia on September 16th. The partial phase of the eclipse begins at 17:08 Universal Time, when the edge of the Moon first enters the dark umbra of the Earth's shadow. Total eclipse lasts from 18:15 to 19:18 UT, and the final partial phase ends at 20:25 UT. Totality occurs during dusk and moonrise in westernmost Europe and Africa, when the Moon is high in the middle of the night in the longitudes of central Asia, and around dawn and moonset in Australia and New Zealand. Monster storm swirls off Mexico's Pacific coast

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- The strongest hurricane on record for the eastern Pacific raged well off of Mexico's west coast on Friday. Officials warned fishing vessels to avoid Hurricane Linda, and warned the storm could affect the Southwestern United States as it weakens.

Linda had winds of 184 mph (294 kph) at 1500 GMT (11 a.m. EDT), with gusts of up to almost 220 mph (352 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

During the past couple of months, the leaders of my local church in Germany asked me to teach on the subject of Israel and Jerusalem. On one of these occasions, a Sunday morning service, as we were worshipping the Lord after the message, I believe I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Call My people to forty days of fasting and praying for Jerusalem, for I am setting the scene for the return of My Son, the Messiah, to the earth!"
